Feel youthful to enjoy travel.

http://youtu.be/pVaMZH5CC9s

I think you may enjoy this video from Nuskin/Pharmanex. I started taking vitality and it definitely improved my energy level.

I don’t know about you but I try to do everything I can to look and feel younger other than surgery or putting poison in me like Botox.

I find that nu skin products are the best and I have been using and distributing them since the early 1990’s. I take my galvanic spa with me on all my travels. I also take fish oil to reduce inflammation and vitality for more energy.

I agree with Joseph Chang, in his book “The aging myth” that it is not that some people have good genes, we all have good genes, it is the way we express them that makes a difference.

Of course one must also get moving. I like natural exercise like walking, swimming, and dancing. We have to do what works for us as individuals.

I try to eat a balanced diet with smaller portions and cut out foods that cause inflammation. Even if one does not have arthritis or any inflammatory disease,  cutting foods that cause inflammation will make one look younger.

Cut out all toxic junk food and other forms of toxins from your life. That includes toxic people. We need to be happy and grateful for what we have. I started a gratitude journal a few years ago and it was one of the very best things that I ever did.

We also need to keep our stress level down. Find work that we enjoy and take as many vacations as possible. Sometimes I just take a mini vacation in my hometown or a nearby city. I reduced my stress considerably when I started working from home doing what I am passionate about.

If we baby boomers want to live longer, keep enjoying our life and keep travelling we must start taking better care of ourselves.

I joined the scary world of face book.

Description: Social Networking Source: own wor...

Image via Wikipedia

I finally took a huge leap into the frightening  face book world with a business page. I was a little apprehensive of giving up some of my privacy but it is too late to think about it now.

We old folks as my niece calls us guard our identity more than the younger generation.

I am not totally new to the scene. I have been using the face book for a personal profile for quite a while now, however; I never befriended very many people. I kept it mostly relatives and a few friends. Lots of friend requests I just left sitting and waiting and being ignored.

I used it mostly for messages until recently. I kept adding more privacy settings. What irony, here I was  in a social media application being downright antisocial.

Face book wants to join the people of the world into one social community and I think that they are succeeding. I heard on the news this morning that they expect to have 7 million active users this year and 175 million pages viewed.

Most of us baby boomers love the internet. A great many seniors are lonely and they spend many hours chatting with old friends that they find. Since socializing is good for health it can’t be bad thing, long as they protect their privacy .

It is funny because the younger people have maybe a thousand people or more as friends. I am sure they do not know more than a quarter or them and even then as mere acquaintances. I remember reading a statistic and it said if you take the average person and count friends of friends, exponentially, they may reach a number around 250.

They post all their personal comings and goings on the wall for all to see. Meet you for a movie at the Odeon at 8:00, leaving for vacation won’t be back until Friday or I  skipped school.  They even have their own language.

I took the full meal deal. I even opened twitter, I think I have gone mad!

I believe that the growing trend  is for business to have a strong on-line presence or they will be left behind.

I am very fortunate in that I build my website with Sbi and they have a great forum with lots of really nice people. We want to help each other become successful. I took a challenge and I know that I never would have moved this quickly on my own.

Healthy food

Blueberry

Image via Wikipedia

Eating healthy food is another step in changing your eating habits for the better. In a previous post I told you how I started by eliminating all junk food and anything with un-recognizable ingredients. If you have been following my suggestions then you have eliminated most of the junk. You probably had a bit of withdrawal symptoms. I know that I did.

I started by taking this next step. Only eat things like fresh fruit and vegetables. Eat small amounts of protein like lamb, turkey, cold water fish like salmon, eggs , oatmeal flax, olive oil, and walnuts. If you are new to fruits and vegetables you may experience some discomfort but hang in there it is worth it. Don’t eat too much raw fruit and vegetables to start with as your system has to get accustomed to it. I took enzymes and they really made a difference.

Cut things made with flour and dairy and you can try to add them back later if they don’t cause a problem for you. Foods containing gluten like most food made with flour caused inflammation for me so I think that it is a good idea to give these up until you start testing for sensitivity. Also most of the dairy in the grocery store have ingredients like emulsifiers.

Start out with fruit and vegetables like blueberries, pears, pineapple , broccoli, sweet potatoes, squashes, parsnips, carrots and garlic. These are tolerated by most. Cook or steam vegetables. Make stir fry’s and soup. Drink lots of water. Try to cut the portion size also.

I have heard people use the excuse that eating healthy cost more but I found the opposite to be true. There are always sales and local markets and cooking with less meat is really budget cooking. I just found local blueberries are in right now and on sale where I live as an example. Also there are lots of easy recipes as cooking this way is simple.

Healthier living is the only answer if I want to keep travelling as I age.

Remember to always check with your health care practitioner.

Vancouver bounced back quickly after riot

Couple kissing during Vancouver riot 2011

I mentioned yesterday on my face book, over a thousand Vancouver citizens were out the morning after the riot cleaning up the city. They were sweeping up glass and getting rid of the graffiti. Other than the boarded up store windows you would not know what had happened the night before. This is the real spirit of the people of Vancouver.

Today people are thanking the police and sending in video to help them catch the rioters.

There was a police car covered with notes of thank you today. Wow, what a difference that is not something we normally see.

It was understood that the police had to put all their effort into dispersing the crowd rather than protecting property because hot spots were scattered. Still they will have to come up with better plans before we have another event with so many people gathering in one area.

Something I noticed is that only 8 of the criminals rounded up were charged with anything so far. More will be arrested but will they come to justice? What about all the people aiding and abetting. Can we find the group of young men that started this and actually convict them and have them serve time? Maybe all the people standing around watching and taking video will redeem themselves for not helping by sending in their photos. There would be no point in arresting everyone involved. There are 1300 tips now but Canada has a reputation for not getting convictions.

Also is there anything we can do to get to the bottom of the real problem in our culture that breeds this anger and disregard for others amongst our young men. Yes, it was a small group that instigated this but why would so many people get such enjoyment out of joining in and destroying the property of others?

No, it wasn’t hockey fans that started it but why did some of these kids think it was a chance of a lifetime to be in the middle of a riot?

In the photo above the couple was identified as Scott Jones, from Perth, Australia,  comforting his girlfriend Alexander Thomas, after she was knocked down by police. She suffered a few bruises from the incident.

The Vancouver riot and what about the hockey game?

This riot had nothing to do with hockey or hockey fans or the citizens of Vancouver. Just because they had a Canuck uniform on does not make them a fan.

Vancouver has a group of people in the city that wait for a chance to create havoc. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH WIN OR LOOSE… IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HOCKEY.

Families that were enjoying the big screen and truly watching the game and looking forward to the celebrations afterward started leaving the city as more and more drunk young men started arriving. The big screen TV had to be shut down before the presentations because of the drunks throwing cans and bottles at the screen.

The news media always goes after the police. Calling for resignations and protecting the criminals. They were repeatedly showing one incident taking a young man into custody. The problem is with our culture sympathising with the criminal they go mostly unpunished.

What kind of society do we have that is breeding and allowing these young trouble makers to continue?

We should not loose our focus. This time maybe we need an inquiry into the reason we have this growing culture among young men. Why do they want to become criminals and anarchists that lay in wait for any opportunity to start trouble, in this case arriving near the end of the game with weapons, gasoline, goggles, hoodies up, masks and a plan?

Some of these men took part in other troubles during the Olympics.

This planned riot started before the end of the game with the burning of a bear representing the Bruins. There has been information that they even had plans ahead of time as to what car was set on fire first. They posed and took their time breaking the first windows so that their friends could get good pictures of them. Then of course there were the idiots that joined in or cheered them on so there were lots of alcohol filled followers. They are sheep and have no minds of their own.

These people are not hockey fans they did not live in the downtown area. We always let these little spoiled brats take over the city. We seem not to be able to punish them.

However; having said that, the police know about the group of trouble makers so it would have been a good idea to keep a sharp eye on them.

Somehow we have come to the point where we cannot touch the criminal. The police have continually been reduced in their authority. If they harm a hair of the person committing the crime while arresting them we will have a lengthy enquiry and the police will be punished!

Police had to cope with between 100 to 150,000 people most young drunk men. Nine officers were injured needing stitches, one with a concussion and lot of human bites! Many off duty police came in to help out. There were lots of brave people in the crowd showing courage.

One police officer tried to help someone and he was carried along by the crowds. There was young women trying to protect their vehicles and one got punched by a man and knocked to the ground and no one could help her. One man a security guard outside the bay tried to stop them from breaking windows yelling that this was his city but they knocked him down and beat and kicked him. Some young women were tugging at their boyfriends trying to stop them from getting into it.

The Bruins had to be escorted and moved just in case there would be a problem. People do also live in this area. There was a reported incidence with a homeless man who looked to be in his 70’s. He had been collecting bottles in his basket. One young man assaulted him but someone stepped in and helped him. One person took off his jersey and threw it into a fire and encouraged someone else to do this and when he would not comply he pushed him into the fire. One imbecile tried to jump over a burning car and fell into the fire but was able to get out. No doubt drugs were also a factor.

St Paul’s hospital reported over 140 people injured with stabbings and broken bones, besides the pepper spray.

Police sometimes left hot spots to try to get the crowd out of down town core and to their praise it was all over in about 3 hours. There have been over 100 arrests so far and 120 tips to help track the culprits down.

Fire fighters had over 287 incidents for them to deal with. They had to prioritize and be mindful of their own security and watch out for people cutting hoses.

They made sure that the major fires did not get away on them and turn more serious.

This morning we wake up to the hangover. There was lots of shock and disbelief in the ugliness and loss of reputation that was built up over the time of the Olympics. It was not nice seeing pictures of it on the cover of the New York Times and the U.K. reporting it as disappointed fans. It was embarrassing and there should be a lot of embarrassed mothers. This is not what I think of Canada.

We saw looters and this is something we never thought could happen here but I think this can happen anywhere. About 15 cars including police cars were set on fire. The amount of property damage has not been tallied yet but over a million were spent for the event itself and windows that were smashed alone are about $2000.00 each.

It looked like a war zone with smoke and helicopters. Newly arrived immigrants thought that this was going to be a really nice event and it scared them and reminded them of the places they ran from, developing countries with violence and real problems. They wondered why the army was not called in.

Bridges were closed off and transit including the sky train was down so a lot of people could not get out of the city core. Many real fans took refuge in places like the Bay.

I heard tourist cancel planned future trips. Many small business people may not be able to recoup from this, it will bring a lot of financial hardship to Vancouver. They were prepared for the upcoming tourist season. We have a trip planned for October and because we live on the west coast and go to Vancouver often it will not stop us. This is normally a very peaceful city with kind and generous citizens.

Who is going to pay for all this? Well insurance may pay for some of it. Store owners were checking their policies this morning to see if they had riot coverage. ICBC will pay for burnt vehicles. In the end it will be the tax payers.

I think maybe we have become complacent thinking the ‘94 riot could not happen again. Let’s face it Canada as a whole not just Vancouver has a problem. Stop protecting these people and try to put a stop to this. Help the police get these people locked away as it would make everyone’s life more enjoyable. Stop blaming the police get the trouble makers so that we can have future events in peace.

This has been really emotional for a lot of people. Stop blaming the hockey fans. Send in your video so the police can analysis it. Lets track them down lets punish them this time. Don’t let them get away with it again.

Al is a real hockey fan. Vancouver is not his team but we watched the game and he said afterwards, they are not talking about the game but about a riot! Vancouver did really well making it to the 7th game of the finals and the Vancouver fans are proud of this. This was all buried under the news about the riot. Also I feel good for Boston as it was the first win since 1972. I am a baby boomer and it makes me feel young again with Boston winning the Stanley Cup.

Working in my garden

lilly of the valley-my garden

Lilly of the valley from my garden

The sun is out and it is going to be a beautiful week-end.

After the days of cloud this is a very welcome event. There is no other place on earth I would rather be than in my little corner of the world on a day like this. In fact I usually don’t travel too far from here in the summer. Last year we were getting ready to leave for Paris about this time but we were back by July 3rd.

I was told by my doctor I would never be able to garden again. Well here I am and I have been gardening for about 3 years now. I don’t do as much as I used to as Al does the bulk of the work. We only have a tiny little piece of garden in the front of our house and strips up the side. The back is mostly undeveloped and wild. I have a container garden on my deck.

I feel really good getting my hands in the dirt and being out in the fresh air.

The lilacs have been out for a while and the roses and lilies have started to bloom. My herbs like oregano and chives and thyme are doing very well. I use these in my cooking, they taste great and have a lot of healing properties. The azaleas, tulips and cherry blossoms are finished.

I think everyone should have a little bit of a garden even if it is a few pots in the house or on the patio. We have a lot of containers on the deck and it is very pleasant to sit out there and have a cup of tea. Also a few years ago I stopped doing art shows but I was always able to go out and paint pictures of plants from my garden.

If you have inflammation in your joints do not give up. It can be turned around and I am sure you could do a little gardening again.

Do you have a garden and do you enjoy it?

Work at home day…June 1

According to the Montreal gazette today is national work at home day. Yay!

They state, “One in four Canadians saying their employer supports the idea of working from home, according to a survey from Workopolis released ahead of Canada’s unofficial Work From Home Day on June 1.

Read more: http://bit.ly/k3eIbf

I am so fortunate to be able to work at home. I have my website and I am loving every minute of it. I can take my work pretty much anywhere using my lap top computer. I used to dislike the commute to work. Also it was an added expense with the cost of gas, clothes and lunch. I think if more people could work from home it would help the environment not to mention our sanity.

I really like how in Mexico and Paris there were so many little shops like bakeries, wine stores, flower shops, stationary everything really run by families who live above the shop or nearby. At one time it was like this pretty much everywhere in the world.

With the internet I believe many more people will start to find ways to work at home again. I don’t know why it seems to be taking so long for large corporations to allow their employees to work at home. I am sure it could be possible even if it is only a few days a week. It certainly would save them in overhead cost.

The truth is not everyone is able to work at home. You really have to focus. I found that in the beginning the house beckoned to me and I was easily distracted. Now I set my hours for work and I go to a designated location in my home. It took some discipline.

This is perfect for baby boomers as they want to continue to work but need freedom to travel, go back to school on-line or start a completely new career.

Were you able to work from home at least for today?

Do you usually work from home…if so what is your occupation and how is it working out for you?

Take that first step to eliminating foods that cause inflammation.

I have been thinking about how to pass on my new-found knowledge about food and inflammation. I decided that the best way for anyone to use this information would be to change habits in baby steps.

This week I would like to introduce to you the idea of eliminating all foods that are known to cause inflammation that leads to many diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. Anyone would benefit from the removal of these foods from your diet you do not have to have arthritis.

The following are some things that you should never eat again. Here are the no no foods. I will list some of them and you will get the picture it is impossible to list them all.

Pork

Beef unless it is organic

Fatty meats hydrogenated vegetable oil, margarine.

Processed foods like pre cooked, packaged bake goods, meats such as luncheon meats, smoked, sausages, meats with nitrates

Most fast foods

Never eat anything that has these ingredients in them: Chemicals, preservatives, additives, MSG, sulphites, or artificial sweeteners.

This second group is a list of stress foods that you may be able to add back in a week or two in moderation once in a while.

See how you feel after eliminating them and then how you feel after introducing them again one at a time.

Coffee, cocoa

Beer, wine, liquor

White flour

Black tea

White rice

Sugar

These foods trouble some people more than others. For some this type of food may have to be eliminated for ever just like the first list as it is the very food that gives inflammation to them.

I would also like to say that it would be wonderful if you never ate food from the second list again, however; that would be foolish to believe that was going to happen. Yes, some people feel so much better that they will never return the bad habits but there are just as many who abandon the good habits and go right back to there previous old bad ones. Most are like me and partake of some stress foods in the second group from time to time but in general follow the new dietary guidelines.

Remember if you are addicted to say coffee for instance take it easy and just try to reduce it down to 1 or two cups a day.

I suggest for a month give up all of these foods and see if you do not feel much better. Good for you if you can stay with it forever. If you are not the type that can stick with this flawlessly forever then like me consume some of the second group once in a while. It is better to do this than deny yourself and then give up completely. That way you always know that you can have a dessert or a glass of wine etc if you want to.

Next month I will give you another step to take.

As always check with your healthcare practitioner when you use any of these ideas that I am sharing.

P.S. I have a confession to make I have tacos al pastor in Mexico once a year in a small quantity. It is a pork dish…we all have our weakness. Don’t let yours stop you from doing the best you can.

Healthy snacks

I just wrote a story on my travel website about travelling with healthy snacks. This is what I do when I travel.

I have had the flu this year and I have a bit of a flare up in my arthritis. I have not been eating as healthy as I should. I know what I need to do to keep the arthritis under control but I am a foodie and a traveler. I find it very difficult. I usually am pretty good at practicing what I preach but I am not perfect and I do go astray from time to time.

I was kind of forced to start eating the right kinds of food for my body because of this last flu bug and of course it is helping with the arthritis also.

I have decided that after this Easter weekend I will get back on track so that I feel better for the summer. I want to be active and get back to my tango dancing.

There are three kinds of people that learn about the correct way to eat for arthritis or whatever ails them. They all cleanse and only eat foods that are known not to irritate arthritis. They all start to feel much better even a lot of the pain goes away.

The first group never wants to experience this again and never adds on any other foods and keeps to their new diet and program for the rest of their life. They are much disciplined or maybe just can’t stand the pain.

The second group starts adding on foods and testing to see how they feel and when they have designed the diet to there needs they stay on it most of the time. Sometimes they go astray on Birthdays, holidays and anniversaries etc. They would never eat junk or chemicals but they will eat some food that flare up the arthritis. It could be something as innocent as bread for instance, even though gluten bothers them or tomatoes or eggplant. It may not necessarily be unhealthy food just detrimental for certain people. Maybe it is bad food like pastries they have been indulging. They know just how much pain and suffering they can handle and then they go back to being disciplined again until they forget how bad it feels and start over again. This is the group that most people fall into including me.

Then there are the ones that refuse to believe that it makes any difference. They either don’t try it or try it for a few days and say it does not work. They do not want to change there lifestyle. They continue on as before only add pharmaceuticals for the pain. Go in for operations and slowly deteriorate.

This is not just for arthritis but applies to a lot of diseases especially inflammatory ones.

Maybe you would like to join in with me…after Easter that is. We will get back to those healthy snacks.
